I’m the coach for Tri Montagne so I have been involved from the beginning. I don’t specifically train for my self anymore but love to help others – from beginners making their way into the sport and experienced triathletes looking to improve their performances

Why did you decide to start training for triathlons?

I started triathlons when I was 15 years old. In my home town in Tasmania, there was a pool triathlon and everyone in my swim squad was encouraged to participate. My elder brother was already doing triathlons so I thought I’d have a go. I loved it and never looked back.

Quelle est votre discipline préférée?

What is your favourite discipline?

I love them all – it’s the combination of the swim, the bike and the run that makes triathlon so special. The key is being able to do them all!

What have you found the hardest/what challenges have you had to overcome?

Because it’s 3 sports rolled into 1, triathlon is challenging. There’s that saying, if it was easy everyone would be doing it. The thing is we can make triathlon easy. By training to do the basics well, we simplify the challenge.

How has the club helped you to improve?

The club has allowed me to give something back to the sport. I was very fortunate as  junior and senior competitor to have excellent support, an excellent coach and great trainman partners. If I can help others enjoy triathlon as much I as I do then it makes me very happy.

I love the comradery in the club. There is a mix of genders, a mix of ages, a mix of abilities. The great thing is that everyone supports each other no matter what. In triathlons everyone that takes part is a winner and this is really encouraged in our club.

What is your greatest achievement so far?

My greatest achievement is that I have been involved in the sport of triathlon in some way for almost 25 years……

What would you say to anyone thinking of joining?

Please do. The more the merrier. It’s a great way to practice for events, develop skills and fitness. I think we’re a fun and friendly bunch too!

Why did you decide to start training for triathlons?

I first did a triathlon before having my 2 children as I enjoyed swimming, biking and running.  My husband and a friend and I spent a summer getting fit and we did the Passy Olympic at the end of the summer and I loved it.  I had my 2 children quite close together but after having them, I wanted to get fit again.  I remember going out on my bike and realising how unfit I was so I entered a sprint triathlon in an attempt to get fit again !

When did you first join/first start training?

I met Amelia and Joe when I was introduced by a friend and I started to do some spinning and fitness classes with them. We then created the triathlon club to bring together triathletes and people interested in triathlon in the local area.

What is your favourite discipline?

I go through phases !  I used to prefer biking but I have been really enjoying running recently and have even done some trail running.  I also love lake swimming but not if it’s too cold !

What have you found the hardest/what challenges have you had to overcome?

Well after having the kids I felt really unfit and weak and I have never had to train to get fit again so that was the first challenge !  Other than that, there are always challenges and things to learn : swimming in rough water and choppy seas, swimming surrounded by a lot of other people, getting over injuries, finding time to train.  And I had a bad bike accident in August 2017

How has the club helped you to improve?

Amelia is an amazing coach.  4 years ago I was weak, I had bad-ache all the time, I was unfit and just riding to Les Gets and back seemed like a long way.  However, by following Amelia’s advice, attending sessions and following a fitness programme designed to fit around my life and what time I have to train, I am now doing half ironman distance triathlons, trail runs and long road biking events.  I feel strong and fit and the journey has been nothing but enjoyable (apart from the odd hard session of course but at the club even the hard sessions are fun & much easier to do with likeminded people).

What do like best about the club dynamics and club members?

I love the mix of people in the club – different ages, backgrounds, professions, levels, motivations, objectives, but everyone supports everyone else, everyone has fun, we all try to improve but we aren’t competing against each other.  The atmosphere is always fun and relaxed at sessions – we work hard, but we laugh a lot too and I always look forward to the sessions.  You’ll never regret coming along to a session !

What is your greatest achievement so far?

I could list some of the good results I have had in races, but the greatest achievements are the little things that happen along the way – learning to swim in choppy water, feeling strong and fit & completing tough races.

Venez essayer.  Qu’est-ce que vous avez à perdre ?  Je pense que vous serez content !

What would you say to anyone thinking of joining?

Come and try – what have you got to lose ?  And I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy it and feel very welcome

Why did you decide to start training for triathlons?

I started to train for triathlon for fitness reasons primarily. I used to run a little at university and have always swum when I can. In Morzine it’s hard not to get involved in cycling if you’re little bit sporty and it wasn’t long before a family friend had lent me a bike and I was entering my first sprint triathlons.

What is your favourite discipline?

The joy of triathlon is that if one day you don’t feel like going for a run, you could swim and/or cycle or vice versa. I just love being outside, in the mountains, enjoying the fresh air or in the water and getting my lungs pumping and a sweat on!

What have you found the hardest/what challenges have you had to overcome?

Cycling downhill has been a real challenge for me as well as simple bike skills such as reaching for my bottle on the bike! A few injuries and psychological scares haven’t helped, but coming back stronger is always the goal!

How has the club helped you to improve?

Training with like-minded people, with who you can share your experiences, as well as tricks and skills, ideas on kit, has really helped. Some of the club are experienced triathletes, some are just starting out and it’s great to see the camaraderie and support between members of the club. Amelia has a great knack of gently bringing out the best in you without you really realising it.

What do like best about the club dynamics and club members?

The club is diverse in characters and all are welcoming and friendly which makes training fun.

What is your greatest achievement so far?

I’m lucky to have progressively achieved little personal goals over my triathlon journey with the last summer being the best, completing my first long distance triathlon.

What would you say to anyone thinking of joining?

Come and have a go! Even if you can’t do all three disciplines, or have concerns and worries, come and share them and as a club we can often find a solution and hopefully before long you will be improving and loving triathlon as much as we do!

Triathlon is for everyone and so is Tri Montagne! There are endless reasons why you and your family should give the sport a try. New events are popping up all over the region, including kids events, which complement some of the already established local Triathlons in the area. For details and link to local events take a look at this link!
Over the next few weeks we have asked some of our club members to share their past experiences at some of the local events. Our first blog is from Ceri Nicol and is about the kids race at Aix Les Bains.

Aix Les Bains kids Triathlon by Ceri Nicol

Aix les Bains was the first Triathlon that my girls competed in. We chose it as we had heard good things about the ‘child friendliness’ from previous years and it was open to children from the age of 6.  It was a great introduction to Triathlons for the kids and we had five local girls taking part.  The format was a 50 metre open water swim, a 1km bike and a 500 metre run to finish.  We decided to stay in the campsite opposite the event so we could make a weekend of it and by the Sunday morning the girls were really excited to get started. It was a boiling hot day and I found myself to be more nervous for the girls doing this than when I compete myself!  Parents were not allowed in the transition area but there were plenty of officials on hand to give the children advice and any assistance they needed to rack their bikes and get all of their kit ready for the transition.  At the start time we all gathered on the banks of the lake whilst the official then walked the children through each stage, taking them all back into the transition area and walking them through the exits and entrances of the transition area for each stage of the triathlon.  I was really impressed by this; they had allowed plenty of time to make sure all the children were happy and ready to start without feeling rushed.

The help continued throughout the event and there were plenty officials in the water making sure all of the children were happy and safe.  There were also lots of officials available in the transition area during the race to help and guide the children in the right direction, reminding a few to do helmets up etc.  All of our girls finished and were so proud of themselves; they really enjoyed it.  My eldest said she found the swim a bit tough – not the distance but just the surprise of a mass start and another of our girls had a stitch but carried on regardless.  A few got their fat mountain bike tyres stuck in the bike racks but they all tried their hardest, enjoyed the whole event and were absolutely buzzing when they crossed the finish line.  We went home having had an amazing weekend and already planning the next event!

Ok, so there’s a new club in town. So why should you join?

Well, to start with Triathlon is a great sport. You swim, you bike, you run… so you get to do 3 sports in one! There are lots of different triathlons of different distances and people of all abilities and ages can compete – so there is something for everyone!

Being part of Tri Montagne will help you enjoy triathlon even more than you would if you just did it on your own. There are going to be regular club training sessions throughout the summer so you get to prepare for your chosen event with like-minded people. You don’t even have to be doing an event, you could just come along for the fitness benefits and to meet other people. The sessions are going to be taken by a fully qualified and excellent coach too, so you’ll probably learn a bit along the way.

All levels and ages are welcome to join the club, whether you are a beginner looking to get into the sport or whether you have done lots of triathlons before.  You don’t have to be a permanent resident, holidaymakers and 2nd home-owners are also very welcome!

The club membership fee is just €45 per person. This gives you the access to the club training sessions which are going to be held on different days and at different times from June through to September so even if you can only make a few sessions it’s still great value for money!

Those that are planning on doing some events also have the option to take a French Triathlon Federation Competition License. This gives additional benefits, the main one being cheaper race entry fees!

So, what are you waiting for? It’s easy to join Tri Montagne. Just follow these steps:

  1. Go to www.trimontagne.com/membership
  2. Complete the membership form with a few simple details
  3. Make the online payment through the link provided
  4. If opting in for the FFTri Competition Licence follow the link to complete the online registration and then email a medical certificate direct to us.

Please note:

  • The Club Membership fee is compulsory to join Tri Montagne.
  • The FFTri Competition Licence is optional.
  • The fees can be paid together or separately if you are adding the compition licence at a later date.
  • We recommend taking the FFTri Competition licence if you are entering 3 or more triathlons for the summer as you will save on one day licence fees and therefore save money overall.
  • After the club fee has been paid you will be added to the email list & Facebook group and receive information about club sessions & events.
